Unit ND1: Managing health and safety

1. You will be able to source, develop, evaluate and interpret relevant health and safety information(such as legislation, guidance, best practice, procedures) and communicate it effectively to those who need it (both within your organisation and those affected by your organisation’s activities such as contractors and insurers).

2. You will be able to promote a positive health and safety culture by:

  • Gaining commitment and participation; and
  • Engaging, supporting, and influencing leaders (and others) to change attitudes and behaviour and make health and safety a priority.

3. You will be able to assess, develop and maintain individual and organisational health and safety competence.

4. You will be able to understand risk management including the techniques for identifying hazards, the different types of risk assessment, considerations when implementing sensible and proportionate additional control measures and developing a risk management strategy.

The Exam Process

The exam and possible sitting fees are not included in the course fee, they are typically paid when you are ready to book your exams.

The NEBOSH National Diploma is separated into 3 Units and is assessed by three open book assessments:

Unit ND1:  Assignment of four parts covering simulations, workplace-based activities, reflective tasks and a research project. This paper has an approximately 60 hours assessment time.

Unit ND2: Case Study – Scenario-based, simulation only assessment with an approximately 40 hours assessment time.

Unit ND3: Case Study – Scenario-based, simulation only assessment with an approximately 40 hours assessment time.

Each assessment is a substantial undertaking. The time-period given for you to complete each assessment reflects this:

Unit DN1: 4 weeks (20 working days)
Unit DN2: 2 weeks (10 working days)
Unit DN3: 2weeks (10 working days)

Learning objectives

The qualification deliberately looks at general workplace issues so that this can be applied in the many different sectors in which health and safety professionals may work.

On completion of the qualification, you will be able to:

  • understand how health and safety legislation is applied in a workplace and the possible enforcement actions that could be taken
  • identify and effectively communicate relevant health and safety information
  • advise on a range of common workplace health and safety issues including how these can be assessed, controlled and monitored
  • develop a health and safety policy strategy (including proactive safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and the change management process)
  • contribute to a risk management strategy
  • promote a positive health and safety culture
  • develop and audit health and safety management systems
  • maintain individual and organisational health and safety competence
  • manage contractors and supply chains to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Entry requirements

Using the NEBOSH National general certificate as its foundation, this course uses UK legislation and International Occupational Standards to help you to gain an expert understanding of health and safety across a variety of industries. Thus, the NEBOSH National Diploma is a natural progression for International General Certificate holders and other NEBOSH online course graduates to further their careers.

Course assessment and certification

To achieve the NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health & Safety Management Professionals, students must pass all three assessments and there is a notional pass mark for each paper of 50%.

To achieve the minimum pass grade the percentage grade for each unit are added together and the grading boundaries are as follows:

  • 0 – 149 marks: Refer
  • 150 – 195 marks: Pass
  • 196 – 225 marks: Credit
  • 226 marks and above: Distinction

The Marking

As with other NEBOSH qualifications, the National diploma exams are assessed and marked by NEBOSH and their examiners. Once you have completed your exam papers, all the exams are then sealed and sent back to NEBOSH, for rigorous marking, checking and results determination process to ensure maximum accuracy and consistency.

You will receive your results 50 working days after the submission date for your assessment. A unit certificate will be issued 20 working days after the notification date for each successful unit.

A qualification parchment will be issued 20 working days after the results notification date for the third successful unit.

Exam fees are paid when you book your exam and are not part of the course costs. Exam fees are £508.

You can access the online anytime you wish.  The course is compatible with all devices and browsers.  There are no programs to download or hardware requirements.

Full tutor support is available at no extra cost. Tutor support is given via an email help desk and phone support is also available.

Exams can be retaken. If you fail, you can rebook the assessments but you will have to pay the exam fee again. However, be assured, the online NEBOSH National Diploma has a high pass rate.

The NEBOSH International diploma is delivered by Global Wise’s training partner NEBOSH Accreditied Centre 548. The course is delivered online with full tutor support available.

Although there are no formal requirements for the NEBOSH Diploma, the course expands on the topics covered in the NEBOSH General Certificate. It’s always recommended that you complete the NEBOSH General Certificate before taking on the NEBOSH Diploma.

However, if you haven’t completed the NEBOSH General Certificate and wish to proceed with the NEBOSH Diploma, it is advised that you have:
• at least five years of experience working in Health and Safety, or
• completed another Level-3 qualification, to have a basic understanding of essential health and safety topics.
