This online course on Protection Against the Effects of Noise looks at how to reduce the risk of noise hazards. Many of us take the faculty of hearing for granted, and often don’t do enough to protect our long term hearing, whether it be in our personal or professional lives. Hearing loss can occur gradually, due to excessive exposure over a period of time or immediate caused by sudden excessively loud noises. Loss of hearing is a disability and can be permanent.

All staff require basic health and safety training, however more specific training, e.g., Working at Height or Manual Handling should be decided upon by assessing the risks of a job and deciding if the risks can be controlled via training.

Employers are required to carry out a noise assessment to identify the risk to employees or contractors and to eliminate or reduce the risks by implementing measures available to help protect hearing. The individual/s responsible for carrying out the assessment should be trained so that they are familiar with the extent and effects of noise induced hearing loss and what can be done to reduce noise and noise exposure.
