Course Overview

New to a teaching/trainng role? The Award in Education and Training may be for you.

Learn about the roles and responsiblites of being a teacher and how to motivate students, learn how to plan a lesson and how to deliver training that is engaging and inclusive.  You will also deliver a structured lesson and evaluate other students’ lessons and give feedback.  You can access the course at times that suit you and all resources are provided online.

This introductory, knowledge-based teaching qualification has no minimum teaching practice requirement. Therefore, it may be undertaken by individuals who are not in a teaching role. However, there is a minimum requirement to take part in micro-teaching.

Learners who have achieved the AET can progress to the BTEC Level 4 Certificate of Education and Training (CET) or the BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).

Course Objectives

The AET can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, including:

  • Individuals not currently teaching or training
  • Individuals currently teaching and training, including those who have just begun or are about to begin
  • Individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a qualification providing an introduction to teaching. It gives learners the opportunity to
  • Develop knowledge related to teaching and learning
  • Develop skills in teaching and learning
  • Achieve a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification
  • Develop their own personal growth and engagement in teaching and learning.
Course Duration

This course runs over 1 week, and most students choose to access the course in the evenings and over the weekend. Students are required to be 19+.

Course Assessments

Students are required to complete 3 assessments, contribute to online discussion topics, deliver a 15 minute micro-teach session at the end of the week, as well as observe and give feedback on another micro-teach session. Micro-teach sessions are held on the final day of the course, and students must be available to present their micro teach either face to face or via Skype.

It is more structured than other online courses, and there is dedicated tutor support and guidance throughout the week.  This ensures everyone has completed their assignments and are ready to present their micro teach sessions to the group – either face to face, or via Skype.

Micro-Teach Sessions

A micro-teach session is a short lesson that is delivered either in person or via Skype to a group of peers. It is a 15 minute lesson which is structured and needs to be approved by your tutor.  We recommend that it is based on a hobby or interest rather than your usual training subject.
