People Handling will be of great benefit to all frontline and ancillary staff within the acute and community hospital sectors; carers working in long-stay institutions, respite care and nursing homes; those who deliver home help services; providers of nurse education.
Healthcare Professionals are often involved in the movement of patients within their daily work. Safe moving and handling of people continues to be a major challenge in all health and social care settings, and poses a risk of injury for the carer and for the person. When patient handling is performed correctly, patients can be moved with ease and with reduced risk of injury, to both the patient and the healthcare professional.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, trainees will:
- Understand the moving and handling of people
- Be able to describe safer people-handling practices
- Recognise specialist guidance from a chartered physiotherapist
- Be able to outline the process for people handling risk assessments
- Understand the principles of safer handling
- Be able to demonstrate the key safer handling techniques
- Know how to roll a person
- Know how to insert and remove sliding sheets
- Understand how to reposition people using sliding sheets
- Be able to assist people to stand and walk with handling belts
- Understand the use of roll boards in lateral transfers
- Know how to use hoists
- Be able to highlight the important role you play in safer people handling

On successful completion of the final assessment (80% pass mark required), a downloadable certificate is immediately available.
