According to a recent poll conducted by the leading talent solutions firm Robert Walters1, “shift shock” has become increasingly common over the past two years. “Shift shock” is a term used to describe the experience of realising that a new job or role isn’t what you expected after starting it. This can happen when the reality of the job doesn’t match the expectations set during the recruitment process or what you envisioned for the role. The survey found that 53% of UK professionals left positions within the first 6 months due to their expectations not being fulfilled, and 52% cited management issues as a significant area where their expectations were not met.
The Robert Walters survey found that 52% of UK professionals cited management issues as a significant area where their expectations were not met.
A survey conducted last year by YouGov found that due to poor management 30% of UK workers quit their jobs2. Poor management has a significant negative impact on job satisfaction, workers’ mental health, and performance3. CIPD have called for “employers to think carefully about how they recruit and develop managers at all levels to ensure they are equipped with the people management skills needed to manage people effectively.”
According to the findings from the Robert Walters survey, 75% of professionals believe their employer demands too much from them, with their workloads being heavier and greater responsibilities than they were led to believe when they were recruited. The likely reason for this is employers cutting costs and combining two roles into one. However, there is always another side to the story and the survey also found that employers said that only 15% of new recruits exceeded their expectations and 42% fell short of them.
