The employer is required to provide all new employees with training on how to work safely.  Which should include first aid, and fire safety and evacuation ensuring that they know how to work safely and without risks to health. This will include all aspects of the organisations health and safety policy and training on any specific aspects of their job role where their safety or the safety of others may be at risk.

First aid training is dependent on the level of hazards in the workplace.

Low levels of hazards will only require the minimum first aid provision, such as an appointed person to take charge of first aid arrangements who doesn’t need to be a first-aider, (a first-aider is someone who has a valid first-aid certificate appropriate to the level required). The Health and Safety Executive say it is beneficial to provide the appointed person with first-aid training, even though they don’t require the formal training required by a first-aider.

With high levels of hazards a fully qualified appointed first-aider is required.
