It is a legal requirement for caterers and restaurant owners to declare to customers food products that contain any of the 14 common allergens.
Food allergy is an abnormal response to a food triggered by the body’s immune system. Is some cases severe allergic reactions can cause serious illness and even death, as in the sad high profile case of Tanya Ednan-Laperouse who died after suffering an allergic reaction to a baguette.
Allergen Awareness training for all food and drink staff has been a legal requirement since December 2014, but not all business owners are aware of this and therefore adequate training is not always carried out.
