Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common condition and a significant cause of mortality and long-term disability. VTE is a major public health issue, and it has been suggested that it results in up to 60,000 deaths per year in the UK, although accurate data is difficult to acquire.

VTE is preventable and this course will provide an overview of the signs and symptoms of VTE, risk factors, prevention, diagnosis and treatment options available.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Identify the predisposing factors in the formation of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
  • Identify the patients that are at risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE).
  • Describe the clinical sign and symptoms of VTE.
  • Understand the use of anticoagulant therapy in the prevention and management of VTE
